NOOR JAHAN: Portrayal of gender norms and a social critique

Writer: Saniya ArshadSaniya Arshad

A popular drama aired on Ary Digital, Noor Jahan, depicts gender representation and power dynamics and highlights various characters with their own complexities. Typically it seems like a saas-bahu drama but it shows resilient and assertive independent women who by the end of the show and even through the start, the character of Noor Jahan herself shows that how despite being alone with no male dependent establishes her business and raise her children with all the challenges she faces through ner in laws but instead of being more of a progressive woman who supports the equality and independence of women, she tends to maintain a strict control over her daugthers in law which showcases the duality of the society especially in Pakistan.

One of the main aspect in this story line which was interesting to me was that how safeena and sumbhul even being oppressed for a long period of time, support eachother and safeena encourages her to stand up for her self and her rights inorder to live a life she desires. The drama also pushes back against patriarchal narratives by showing women who gain strength, assert their independence, and, in some cases, choose to leave unhealthy marriages.

Lastly, The men in Noor Jahan, often depicted as naive and overly reliant on their mother. This shift emphasizes how women, rather than men, drive the narrative through their growth and acts of defiance against rigid family expectations. Overall, this show showcases on how the agency of women should be considered when compared to others.

I appreciate how you dissected Noor Jahan’s character as a strong, independent woman who, despite facing significant challenges, successfully establishes a business and raises her children on her own. It’s intriguing that, while she embodies resilience and independence, she also exercises strict control over her daughters-in-law. This contrast really does mirror the societal paradox in Pakistan, where independence and control often coexist in complex ways within family dynamics. This duality makes Noor Jahan’s character relatable and nuanced, providing a realistic portrayal of how social expectations and personal beliefs often conflict.

Additionally, the bond between Safeena and Sumbhul adds a beautiful layer to the storyline, illustrating how, even in oppressive circumstances, women can support and uplift one another. It’s a refreshing…

I’m really glad you brought up Noor Jahan as it provides an fresh and interesting perspective to the typical Saas bahu drama’s. Its surprising to see the success of Noor Jahan since its probably the 100th saas bahu drama in Pakistani dramas. Noor Jahan effectively revitalizes the classic elements of traditional saas bahu drama, using layered storytelling and bold character portrayals to capture audiences. The show masterfully blends familiar themes such as family conflicts, power struggles, and shifting alliances into a refreshing, engaging narrative that keeps viewers hooked.

What I liked a lot is the portrayal of the wealthy, attractive, and naive heroes who are utterly unaware of their mother's manipulations and in awe of their own manhood and this…
