Hey guys!
So i wanted my first post on this blog to be about this incredible new show that I watched (and finished) this past weekend. The Haunting of Bly Manor is a ten-episode show which was recently released on Netlfix. It is the sequel to The Haunting of Hill House which was released two years ago. Both seasons, however, are totally unrelated to each other so even if you haven't seen the first one you can still totally watch this one! You guys probably heard about the show since it generated A LOT of buzz and in my opinion, rightfully so. The Haunting of Bly Manor is an artistic masterpiece. Even though it falls within the genre of 'horror' this show is absolutely nothing like your typical, mainstream horror shows or movies. There are no childish ghosts with painted faces running around, no jump-scares, and no superficial characters. The show has an extremely creepy and eerie vibe. It gets under your skin, constantly makes you feel unsettled and leaves you asking questions and wanting more and this combination in my opinion is the BEST kind of scary. Another thing that I absolutely loved about the show was the emphasis the writers laid on developing the plot and the story-line. The show goes way way beyond just being scary. It actually has a deeply rich plot which unravels gradually and gracefully. It is contextually rich which makes the story extremely enjoyable. The characters too are very well developed. Unlike the simple minded protagonists of most horror movies the characters in The Haunting of Bly Manor are confounding and complex creatures, each of them battling their demons which the viewers are given an insight too. All in all, the show does complete justice to its predecessor (The Haunting of Hill house which was also absolutely brilliant). With Netflix being cluttered by crappy content, this show, one of a kind is top-notch content and i'd recommend you all to try it out. I promise you will get absolutely HOOKED! And if any of you do end up watching it upon my recommendation do let me know! Would love to delve into unpacking this quality piece of creation!
You’re absolutely right! I was expecting a Hill House like horror but it really doesn’t go that direction. There’s more of an existential horror to it I guess. Like questioning the pain we inflict on the people we love and the ways we torture ourselves for it or dealing with things like coming to terms with death, dealing with how everything is temporary and will fade with time etc
"The haunting of" series has become an instant classic in my opinion! I've loved both the seasons, but I have to ask: Am I the only one who felt like this show has very strongly inspired by American Horror Story? (Especially season 1)
